Good preparation. What does it really mean? How can tennis player really prepare for the match? When does match preparation starts? 1 hour before the match or 3 days before the tournament? Finally, does preparation have small or big impact on final result of the match?“I won because I was working really hard during the last weeks. I was really well-prepared”. These words we can hear many times when professional players answer questions during post-match interview. They always emphasize how important it is to do everything they can before the match so they can play their best tennis during the match. Do players at lower levels have the same approach and they value match preparation as much as champions? Unfortunately they don’t.
Many players associate words “Professional match preparation” only with the last 30 minutes before the match. They think that running few lapses, doing dynamic stretching, performing exercises with resistance bands as also listening to favourite songs will make them perform perfectly. The true is that most of the time they will start the match really badly or they will have problems for the entire match at one or more areas. If you want to be the best version of yourself you have to take care of match preparation in a completely different way than before.
Professional match preparation has many benefits. If you do this correctly you:
- Prepare your body and mind for incoming match
- Improve skills
- Avoid injuries
- Have advantage over the opponent
- Are able to play your best tennis from the first point
As you can see it is not only about current match. It is about creating habits that have both short and long-term benefits. That is why it is crucial to seriously approach match preparation while playing against champions as well as against much weaker opponents.
To prepare for your match you have to include many factors. Here are just few of them:
- Perform specific and individual physical circuit of exercises
- Go through your mental routine using visual imagery and music
- Scout your opponent
- Set strategy based on knowledge and “Opponents’ library”
- Take care of nutrition and hydration according to the time of the match
- and many more
